What are Bridge Diodes?

A bridge diode is a diode module that forms a bridge connection of 4 to 6 diodes in one package, and it is used for rectifying an alternating current into a direct current or pulsating current.

For single phase alternating current

For three phase alternating current

How to use bridge diodes…Full wave rectification

  • Input voltage: AC
  • Output voltage: Pulsating / DC

The bridge diode inverts the negative voltage side for the AC input and outputs a pulsating current.
The output side is smoothed out on a capacitor, which enables the output of DC voltage.
There are many bridge diodes designed to rectify commercial frequencies of 50/60 Hz, and general rectifying diodes can be used as the type of diode.
When these diodes are used to rectify high frequencies, such as secondary rectification on switching power supplies, then fast recovery diodes or Schottky barrier diodes are used for the bridge diodes.

Significance of UL certification of bridge diodes

Can be attached directly to the chassis (ground) without going through an insulating sheet
